These days I am not a big fan of most American Christianity… same goes for much Australian Christianity which has been heavily influenced by America… case in point, my mum became a Christian at a Billy Graham crusade and I eventually followed suit.
Donald Trump won office with the help of the votes of the Christian religious right, but it is clear that he promotes a narrative that is totally opposite to the teachings of Jesus. I think that any person who has read the gospel parables and advocates themselves as a follower of Jesus should be above all, the most inclusive of all people and keen to make sure everyone they meet, and all in society feel accepted and included in every way.
Donald Trump and his followers are the total opposite to this, they operate by a fear based narrative. Sadly much Christian teaching is the same, it tells you that you are right with God because you have ‘believed in Jesus’ and aligned your thinking correctly…. it’s akin to the ‘goodies vs baddies’ narrative. We are the holy ones accepted by God… those others who do not believe the same as us will burn in eternal torment forever because they didn’t believe right. This has to be the most screwed up, mentally destructive and monstrous idea ever perpetuated by the mind of man.
This fear based narrative operates in the same spirit as does Trump and his followers. Mahatma Ghandi once said: “The enemy is fear. We think it is hate; but it is really fear”. I agree wholeheartedly.
