Have You Been Told Lately?

Recently I posted the following words and a YouTube song on my wife’s Facebook page. This hit classic, often sung at weddings and made popular by Rod Stewart, was originally written and performed by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison.

“Have I told you lately that I love you, have I told you there’s no one else above you, fill my heart with gladness, take away all my sadness, ease my troubles that’s what you do”.

There is some thinking in Christian circles that it would be wrong for me to say there is no one else above my wife, the reasoning is along the lines of always needing to put God first. I have sat listening to more than one sermon describing a checklist of our love priorities i.e. 1/ God, 2/ Family, 3/Church etc. In my opinion this is faulty religious thinking. Firstly, God is not jealous of the relationship you have with your partner, friends, family or anyone else in the world, I think most of us know in our hearts that this is the case, otherwise we humans wouldn’t write songs like the above-mentioned.

Secondly, every person is made in the image and likeness of the creator who also resides in every one of us; this is how it has always been. The more we love, the more God is made manifest in our hearts and in this world. This is one of the ways that we advance what Jesus called ‘The Kingdom of God’.

Jesus said he was one with the Father and his prayer was that we would see that we are one with Jesus and the Father too. He took great pains to correct the wrong thinking that people had in his day about the nature of God. He said that if we give someone a glass of water, or look after a sick person, or feed someone, or visit someone in prison, that we are doing that good deed not just to that person, but to him and God as well.

Quantum Physics tells us that we are actually all physically connected, this is true spiritually as well, God resides in everyone, and we are all one.

So don’t be afraid to tell someone they are the best thing that ever happened to you, or that there is no-one you love and appreciate more. Give and express love to the fullest extent.

“There’s a love that’s divine, and it’s yours and it’s mine, like the sun, and at the end of the day, we should give thanks and pray, to the one, to the one”.
